Lama Tendar Bio - Brief  Version

Lama Tendar is a Tibetan Buddhist monk. He is the founder and Spiritual Director of the Medicine Buddha Centre in Frankston, Victoria and the founder and board member of the registered charity – Shantideva Buddhist Foundation.

Born in the Kham region of Eastern Tibet, he entered monastic life at the age of 12 when he was ordained as a novice monk at Dego Somdupling Monastery.  Shortly afterwards, he travelled to Lhasa, where he studied at Gyuto Ramoche Monastery for seven years, learning the ancient art of Tibetan tantric chanting, prayer and meditation. He continued his studies at the Gyuto Tantric University in Northern India, completing his degree in Buddhist Philosophy with first division honours in the specialisation of Sacred Buddhist Arts.

In 2000, he began travelling throughout Europe as Chant Master with the Gyuto Monks of Tibet on the Millennium Europe Tour.  In 2001, Tendar visited Australia for the first time, travelling extensively with the Gyuto Monks. He returned to Australia on a special humanitarian visa in 2003 and became an Australian citizen in 2005.

He regularly travels across Australia to teach meditation at various centres and retreats, performing blessings, sacred rituals, Buddhist ceremonies and participating in community cultural programs.

Tendar is a specialist Tibetan sound healing practitioner, a living tradition that has been passed down for thousands of yeas through the Tibetan guru lineage system, and transmitted directly from his own teachers, themselves master practitioners. Tendar actively applies Buddhist healing methodologies and teaches other people how to relieve suffering in themselves and others. He offers Sound Healing courses twice a year at the Medicine Buddha Centre that attracts participants from across Australia.

Tendar has released four independent albums of traditional Tibetan chanting and music and is well known for his highly immersive two hour Sound Bath Healing Meditation Sessions.

In 2014 he was the recipient of Dharmachakra Award for 'Advancing Education' by the Buddhist Council of Victoria.

Tendar is known by most people as ‘Lama Tendar’. Lama means ‘Teacher' and his surname is Lobsang ( pronounced Losang ) which means ‘Kindness”.

His life’s work is dedicated to awakening innate wisdom and compassion within individuals, enabling them to realise their full human potential for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Terminology

Pronunciations

Tendar is known by many people as ‘Lama Tendar’.

Tendar is his given name ( first name )

Lama means ‘Teacher or Guru’.

His surname is Lobsang and is pronounced Losang  ( Lo-Sang )- which means ‘Kindness”.

La - Adding "la"  to Tibetan names is a common cultural practice showing respect, affection, and familiarity,

Examples might include Lama la, Tendar la or Ani la.

Ani -   is a respectful prefix for a Buddhist nun, derived from a word meaning aunt, honoring the Buddha's aunt who was the first nun.  By including the respectful Suffix 'la' -  'Ani-la" is a term of respect and affection.

Shantideva -  ( Correct pronouniation is  - 'Shanti-Dev-Ah' )  ( it is not pronounced Shanti - Dee-va )

Geluk  / Gelug - Pronounced GHE-loo or GHE-looh with a short, sharp stop at the end rather than a full G sound.

The Gelug school (meaning "virtuous"), is the youngest of Tibetan Buddhism's four major traditions, it was founded by Lama Tsongkhapa in the 14th century.  Lama Tendar is a 'Gelupa' monk, and comes from this lineage and tradition.

Sangha -  is a Sanskrit term meaning "assembly," or "community,"

It can refer to a monastic order, the broader community of practitioners, or a specific local group.  The Sangha is one of the Three Jewels of Buddhism - (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha).  Emphasizing unity, shared practice, connection and mutual support for the aim of enlightenment and liberation from suffering for all sentient being.

Medicine Buddha Centre - It is also know as the Medicine Buddha Trantrayana Meditation Centre.  It is often referred to by our Sangha  as ' The Centre' for short.

Tantrayana is another term for the practice and tradition of the Vajrayana.

Vajra - translates to diamond or thunderbolt.  The reason it is called this is that through its practices we transform our body, speech and mind to be like a diamond—strong, clear and indestructible !

There are three 'Ýanas' or main paths in Buddhism, these are also referred to as 'vehicles'.

  • Hinayana ( or Theravada )

  • Mahayana

  • Vajrayana

Tantrayana or Vajrayana - is often called the Diamond Vehicle

Tibetan Buddhism is a complete system that includes all three paths, with Vajrayana/ Tantrayana providing a unique set of "skillful means" to achieve the Mahayana goal of Enlightenment & Buddhahood.

In order to achieve this, we need a suitably qualified guide or Vajra Master to assist us.
